Sharee Fowler and Shirley M. Spease – Winston-Salem Portrait Project

T. Sharee Fowler and Shirley M. Spease

T. Sharee Fowler is a fierce, compassionate changemaker and longtime organizer for women’s rights and educational equity. She teaches nonprofit management and community leadership at Salem College and mentors other social justice advocates.

Shirley Spease is a truth-teller and fierce voice for her neighborhood. She gives her time, heart and energy to be a caretaker for those who are disabled, including her son Jacques.

Sharee teaches and helps others. She teaches at Salem College, serves as the Holly Avenue Neighborhood Association President, and she is also an organizer. I wanted to capture her expressions of happiness.

Shirley is a truth-teller. She is a fierce voice for the Northeast Neighborhood Association. She says she gets in a lot of trouble with her mouth. It’s clear that it’s good trouble. She is a caretaker for her son Jacques. I asked her to think about the source of joy in her life, and to pose in ways she would like people to see her.
