Portrait Nominee: Susan Wilson

Donna Susan Wilson represents the La Deara Crest community in the Northeast Ward of Winston-Salem. She has been with her husband for 42 years, and they have three children, eight grandchildren, and a host of godchildren.

Susan just retired a year ago, and felt that God laid it on their hearts to serve their community by giving children a hot breakfast before school every morning. They call this The Breakfast Club. Just a little under 30 children come each morning around 7am and sign their names on a roaster to keep track of who comes. She says that nothing beats hot grits and sausages!

Susan and her husband have been very blessed with a few donations over the years, but most of the time they pay everything out of pocket. They understand that some parents either just don’t have time in the morning to prepare breakfast, or can’t afford to, but seeing a smile on a child’s face and hearing them say, “Thank you, see you tomorrow!” is what makes Susan and her husband happy.

There is a lot of hunger in Winston Salem, and anyone can make a food contribution to them.
