An artist and innovator, Nadiyah Dorsey-Quander builds her community by grassroots cultural engagement. “People are beautiful and interesting if you can avail yourself to be curious and kind.”

With a lifelong commitment to serving the academic and personal development of young people, Bill McClain developed the Youth Services Department for the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem and co-founded the Guiding Institute for Developmental Education (GIDE).

Mr. McClain has spent his life serving youth in the community. He builds strong enduring relationships across what others might see as boundaries. The time spent photographing Mr. McClain was joyful and an unexpected delight on an otherwise ordinary day. I angled the camera from the ground to symbolize his stature in the community, and had him extend his hand out as a gesture of humanity, support and encouragement.
